Ontario Reign raises funds for youth hockey

(ONTARIO – Citizens Business Bank Arena) Hockey can be an expensive sport especially for families on the west coast but the Ontario Reign minor league hockey team is doing their part to help keep youth hockey alive for local children.

Ever since the Ontario Reign entered their partnership with Icetown sports center in Riverside, it has been a win-win situation for youth sports; namely for the Junior Reign hockey club.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Ontario Reign hosted its scholarship fundraising night in support of these local youth programs in order to keep young kids on the ice.

There may be a wealth of talent right here in our local community, but there is a shortage of funds in these tough times to keep kids involved with this costly sport.

“We actually do have a lot of talented hockey players right here in the Inland Empire,” said Matt Dunaev, director and general manager of Icetown. “Our demographic has been needing more fundraising to help families be able to put talented kids back into the program.”

The scholarship fund night was just what these children needed in order to keep some of their aspirations alive.

Everyone involved seemed more than happy to do their part, especially former athletes who played in the alumni game.

“We’ve had good careers, most of us and we’re always striving to get out and help out in any way we can in the community,” said former Los Angeles Kings hockey player, Ian Turnbull.

Proceeds from a game featuring Los Angeles Kings alumni, as well as the matchup of the Colorado Eagles versus the Ontario Reign, and a jersey auction went toward this scholarship fund that night.
